dammit. emerging a masked version of Gaim kinda broke emerge sync && emerge world, since it always tries to install the latest unmasked version if the installed version doesn't match. which is fucked.

and it's not letting me emerge gaim-smileys because one of the files it grabbed is corrupt. why does this not surprise me? okay, it was barfing because wget was fucking up the download. downloaded it myself it Worked Just Fine.

and all because I decided to make sure I was up to date before I emerged MLdonkey. kinda makes me wonder what would happen if I tried to emerge KDE or GNOME again...

damnable thing spontaneously rebooted itself. let it go into Windows and downgraded Trillian to 1.0c; seems stable for the moment.

the lack of a patch to make Yahoo! work with Trillian is really pissing me off though, and I'm seriously considering going back into Linux long enough to grab my config files and switching over to Gaim here, too. but I like Trillian's meta-contacts!

eh, I'll deal. but if Cerulean doesn't release a patch for that in the next couple of days, I'm definitely switching.

Windows barfed; big surprise there, huh? but I finally got X running at 1600x1200 by changing the HorizSync and VertRefresh values to those of the Sony G500 (whatever...) and adding a modeline to lock 1600x1200 to 60Hz (hey, it works). not bad for a monitor with a maximum resolution of 1280x1024, according to users.

now if only it were a little bit bigger...

oh, and I'm emerging Fluxbox 0.9.6_pre9, and it is a pain in the ass to figure out how to do that. it's not even a masked release, but the ebuild was sitting right there in /usr/portage/x11-wm/fluxbox, so I was scratching my head and wondering what kind of game they were playing.

a few minutes of poking at the Gentoo forums revealed that I needed to point emerge at the ebuild manually, as in emerge /usr/portage/x11-wm/fluxbox/fluxbox-0.9.6_pre9.ebuild!

what the hell is the point of even having the ebuild if you're going to make us jump through hoops just to use it? I mean, isn't preventing that the whole point of Portage?

I do not like the "improvements" made to Fluxbox in the 0.9.x series. tabs and the title bar should be separate; you should be able to switch workspaces from the middle-button menu like you could before; keeping menus open after hitting a terminal entry (like launching a program) is asinine; and simple rendering is subpar!

I'm downgrading NOW.

mmm. two good reasons for getting my other computer working before anything else: more disk space available to Linux (I have 2 more drives I can put in it), and I can put the DVD drive back in this heap^H^H^H^H fine computer without removing something important, like the drive LILO's installed on or the CD-RW.

I like this song. it's kinda anthemic, almost, but it's relaxing. I should find some more songs like it and burn them to a CD to play while I sleep.

later, I think

tater tots are good thinking food for me, I guess. AOL won't let me upload files unless I use their client, which is not an option at the moment. Brinkster says I'm over my bandwidth limit, which is pretty low anyway, and I couldn't remember any of my other hosting accounts. so I got a snack.

grabbed the bowl of leftover tater tots from dinner (mmm, cold shredded-potato pellets!) and sat back down to think, when it hit me: we use Charter cable, which supposedly has free web hosting; why don't I check that out?

but then I found out that it doesn't automatically create the FTP/web server account, you have to do that yourself. thankfully they've added pages to do that to their website so you don't have to call them up to do it anymore, so I did that.

and it supports remote loading! but anyway, the whole reason I started this thing was so I could upload an image.

for those who have expressed curiousity about my userpic and/or my chat icons, click to see what I cropped 'em from. but it's, ah, a little on the large side at 512 Kb. dunno why, sorry. all I did was open up the bitmap in GIMP and save it as a PNG. ¬_¬

(and why won't LogJam save the preformatted option?)
