That's the way I usually end up doing it too, but I hate it because I can never find a position where I can actually see what I'm doing and file easily. The only real troublesome nails are my thumb and pinky (which is also problematic on my left hand, for a different reason: my pinkies aren't very firmly rooted; I can wiggle them from side to side without moving the finger). That and the fact that I can't really hold my hands steady - when I do my left hand, both hands are actually moving.
And I trimmed my right thumb back too far. Naturally. -_-
