on the subject of weird dreams -- how did we get here? -- several things suddenly came to mind. one: that the varying levels of consciousness wherein I can dream, or I'm aware of my surroundings, are somewhat confused for me. I used to (frequently) dream that there was some sort of glowing colony of insect-creatures occupying much of my bed, at which point I would freeze, fully aware but still seeing them, and procede to hyperventilate. almost always waking my mother, despite two doors and some 30 feet intervening.

two: when I die in a dream and it doesn't awaken me, one of several things happen. all sensory input fades, but I remain aware of what's going on around "me;" my "consciousness" expands and I become aware of everything in my dream world, yet remain centered in my "body;" or things simply stop, while I retain awareness of self (but not of time, strangely.)

I also have memories of seeing people looking at me while I sleep. when I've questioned them about it, they've told me quite seriously that my eyes were closed. on the other hand, they've also told me of times when they've tried to awaken me, I responded coherently, and have absolutely no recollection of. I've also been questioned about not responding when I've gotten up to go to the bathroom and then gone back to bed. I had no response for those, since I don't go back to bed once I've gotten up; ergo, I wasn't properly conscious.
