hyuriI was right, it did hurt.
on the second (?) reboot, my computer hung immediately after POST. eventually it became clear that this was due to a corrupted BIOS. desperately throwing everything at it, I finally, somehow, corrected that problem after several hours. then it somehow ate my NIC. I don't know either.
after trying a number of things, one of them seems to have convinced it to regurgitate the NIC though, so I guess it's okay now.
just figuring out what I need to reinstall is giving me the shakes, never mind actually doing it.
