it may not be the correct method (hell, it definitely isn't!), but with the aid of my PSX->LPT adapter and the cord from a PSX controller I cut up a while back, I have a functional gamepad again. plugged the loose wires from the end of the PSX cord into the appropriate holes on the plug end of an SNES pad. it works, and It Is Good.

as soon as my uncle gets here I'm going over to my grandparents house to try once more to get their modem working. the computer is a bitch. but I'm better (worse?).
