hyuriI main-tanked ICC10 to 11/12 with less than 5k GearScore, even though common wisdom holds that 5300+ is necessary even to tank Marrowgar. 4 months later we're back at 11/12, despite everyone having drastically better gear, after spending the intervening time at 10/12. we still haven't gotten any Lich King kills.
what happened?
first, we got better gear. gear über alles. better-geared players started getting raid slots ahead of better-skilled players. since they already had a raid slot, the geared players had no incentive to improve. since they didn't have a raid slot, the skilled players had no way to gear up or practice. so the skilled players quit because they didn't feel valued, and the geared players quit because we weren't advancing.
compounding the issue, the officers try to put together two 10-man raids every week with sufficient raiders in each who are both skilled and geared to carry the rest, thus splitting up our consistent raiders and demoralizing them because neither group has the horsepower to pull through. so those assigned to group 2 quit because they don't feel valued enough to stay with the 11/12 group, and those assigned to group 1 quit because we're still pulling in unprepared filler at 11/12.
last week we had 3 healers for our LK attempts: 2 Druids and a Disc Priest, with a Shaman throwing in some heals to fill the cracks. we eventually told the Priest to do nothing but cure the Necrotic Plague, since his heals were completely off. this upset him. he blamed his faulty healing on having low gear, despite having better gear than me, the main tank.
I'm sorry, but gear has nothing at all to do with your heals being late, slow, mis-targeted, or unnecessary, your cures being completely absent, and your positioning being totally off. that's not even skill, that's a failure of attention. if your connection is lagging, say so so that we can either compensate or replace you. if your interface is lagging, turn off your addons. if your focus is lagging, tell us, log out, and get some sleep or food or whatever it is you need. if you need a break, speak up!
