apparently it all came down to memory timings—which I still didn’t have correct, apparently. however, I’m now in the process of migrating the recovered userdata from my previous ... I guess computer is the right word, at this point ... into my new one. which is running XP x64. I figured what the hell, if I have to start over anyway....

also, I can now run several programs as one user and still have plenty of oomph to run things as my regular user. this is new and definitely not unwelcome. some things are already giving hints of a difficult adjustment, but really, not much worse than switching to XP in the first place.

I’m still waiting on FFXI updating so I can see how the gaming works. maybe I should have started with WoW.

Welcome back to the land of the connected! Grants on fixing the memory timing, too. Your Geek > My Geek. Teach me, master.

I think you'll be surprised at how good FFXI can look and run once everything is in great order. Of course, it can only look so good. WoW, as much as I hate to say, would be a better performance benchmark. :\

Indeed. I set everything to max detail at 1600x1200 and it ran perfectly.

Unfortunately, I seem to have misplaced several tens of thousands of saved emails. Permanently, I fear. My current efforts are bent towards restoring as many as possible.
