coming back from the Ontario airport, I just about got creamed by a Jeep.
about 1/4 mile ahead of me, I see an SUV try to cut through the gap between a big rig in the #3 lane and a smaller car slightly behind in the #4—and fail. he seems to have clipped the rig’s bumper or something, because his rear end lets go. unfortunately, it hits the car and transferred enough energy in slamming the car onto the shoulder to stop spinning and go shooting across the freeway. into another car, naturally, which bounces him back towards the outer shoulder again.
which is where I come in. I missed him by about 10 feet, close enough to see that he was still on the gas even though he was rolling backward toward the shoulder after hitting two cars. one of those cars, as I see a few moments later, is missing the driver’s door.
I pulled over, as do several other drivers, to calm down a little. as I get ready to pull back into traffic, one of them starts rolling up behind me so I let them merge first. a moment later I realize that the Grand Cherokee that I just allowed ahead, and who I am now following, is the guy who started this whole mess. and he has no license plates to report.
at this point I decide that Getting Away might be a good idea, so I scoot past with as much speed as I can manage. last I saw him, he was exiting at 138.
