...spending 2 minutes writing, and a few more double‑checking, a small addition. I got LJ.NET to properly handle the interval returned by checkfriends. which means that after a call to checkfriends, the timer interval is now 10 hours instead of 10 minutes.

only took, uh... 6 lines, I think. could have done it in less, but...
