May. 31st, 2002 03:03 amonce, I had a friend.
she was small, had black fur, and accepted me, unquestioning and undemanding.
two and a half hours ago, my only friend died, victim of a dog attack in my own driveway.
she held on long after her sight failed, after she could no longer smell anything, until all she could do was slowly pant and fight the pain.
and when I was awakened and brought to her, when I knew there was nothing that could be done for her, I told her that I loved her, and to stop fighting.
and she did.
goodbye Shadow, I miss you.
