boy, I feel stupid. finally figured out that my headache is because I never set the refresh rate. trust me, 1600x1200 at 60Hz is not pretty on a 17" monitor.

Ouch. I tolerate nothing less than 85Hz

Mind you, I also tend to stick to 1024x768

I think I have it set to 75 or 85Hz—somewhere around there, anyway. But I scatter too many things across my screen to use a lower resolution than 1280x1024, and even that's fairly cramped. ¬_¬

Oh ow. 75Hz is my floor. 60Hz creates instant nausea. @_@
