I think the clue is here: (http://order.1and1.com/xml/static/Faq;jsessionid=25F0CCE8D5A2AA6E755C302BD58ABC39.TC62b?__frame=_top#1)
What happens after the three years? You may seamlessly switch to any hosting plan ranging from $5 to $29 a month. Or you decide to go for the full power of a Dedicated Server starting as low as $69 a month. Of course, you may do so anytime within the 3 years period.
I think you need to be really careful with automatic renewal, like your contract automatically being renewed for another 3 years just before these 3 years end etc. For the rest of it it looks very promising
also: (http://order.1and1.com/xml/static/HostingProfessional;jsessionid=25F0CCE8D5A2AA6E755C302BD58ABC39.TC62b?__frame=_top) 5,000 MB/month traffic ($.99 per GB for additional traffic)
So they are hoping that you exceed your bandwidth... Less scrupulous businesses may actually automatically hit your page several times a day to inflate that.
Strictly legal, and according to business sense... the offer is limited, and will appeal to a lot of people. This will ensure a market share, which will bring in other (paying) customers.
In three years I'll either have some way of paying to renew the account or have canceled the account. If they jack around with the numbers, it'll definitely be the latter option, ASAP.
Clue?
