hyurimy father is discovering that there isn't much point to using Win2k instead of 9x "because it's more secure," if you're just going to use Internet Explorer and AOL and not run a proper anti-virus program. oh, and log in as a user with full administrative rights.
but I think I'll pass on this opportunity for Mozilla/*ix evangelism. there's not much point; he'd just ignore me.
on a tengential track: why does he insist on having "the best" computers in the house, when the most intensive thing he does is run AOL? I mean, he has an Athlon 900; a dual P3 Xeon 450 with 2 MB cache on each (along with 4 more Xeon CPUs and another dual Xeon motherboard); roughly 100 GB of high-speed SCSI drives, including a 3-drive, lockable RAID cage; a 17" and a 19" monitor, which he used to run at 640x480 (and bitch about how things looked); a Sound Blaster Live! (he turns his speakers on maybe once a month); a laser printer hooked up to one of his computers that's not shared on the network; 2 CD-RWs and 2 Zip drives, none of which he uses; 512 MB of RAM per box...
and my brother's over in his corner running modern games like GTA3 on a Duron 700 with 256 MB of RAM, a 10-base-T NIC, and (the only redeeming feature) a Radeon 9000 AGP.
and he wonders why I get irritated when he bitches about his computers. >_<
