hyuribloody damn piece of... *ahem* now that I have that out of my system...
pay attention to the type of fan on your processor. I never really looked at it before, but yesterday I had to get a new one because the idiot that sold me this box put a bloody old 5/12v pass-through fan on a Pentium 3, making the standard operating temperature around 120 degrees centigrade. not good, 'cause the automatic shut-off in a P3 seems to be around 130 degrees.
anyway, got a new fan, cleaned it and the processor die with isopropyl alcohol, spread that nice thermal grease on the die -- and got an operating temp of around 35 degrees. seems to be a bit more stable now.
next up: tracking down a BIOS flashing utility so I can fix my motherboard. some idiot flashed a beta BIOS onto it.
and I think I'll try to convince my dad to give me another 128MB SDRAM, since he apparently doesn't have enough money left for that budget he gave me. fifty-five bloody years old and he can't manage money even after running his own business. twice. sometimes I hate my family.
