oookay. the Mozilla devs fucked up the Linux version sometime in the last few months, because the default UserAgent string is missing the name/version at the beginning: all it has is the slash. which is a pain, because Sun, in their infinite wisdom, decided to make their Java plugin dependent on that number being after the string. and the only version compiled with gcc 3.2 requires it to be >= 5.

and when it isn't, it kills Mozilla. neat, no? bastards. took me the better part of an hour to find out that I need to add a custom useragent by setting a value for general.useragent.override in one of the many .js files it uses for configuration, and to find out that the file I needed to put it in was /usr/local/mozilla/defaults/pref/all.js. which is bad in and of itself, because I'll have to add that line again every time I install a new build.

on the other hand, I did manage to rebuild my ReiserFS tree; so I still have Linux to drain my time and energy. though I'm not sure that's a good thing, considering it still needs to recompile X. I really don't recommend the experience.

I've been sitting here for the past few days thinking that there weren't any snacks in the house (we have tortilla chips, but without salsa or guacamole or something...), but I found a dusty box of graham crackers in the garage. they taste like old cardboard with the barest hint of sweetness, but they're edible -- and I don't have to cook them!
