my computer's fucking with me, and I don't like it. came home, it had locked up. rebooted it, got into Windows, things went smoothly. halfway through reading an email, it froze. immediately after Winamp finished this bloody song. so I'm gonna stick to Linux for a while, see if I have any problems here.

When was the last time you did a clean install? I mean, wiped the drive and installed?

Erk. Um, last time I installed Win2k? Which was sometime this year? But this is ME, so, um... Toward the end of 2000? I have a really bad habit of just jury-rigging fixes; as long as it's reasonably stable, I'm happy. But I have weird ideas about what's reasonable.

But really, I think it has something to do with the fact that my computer's been on for a couple of weeks. It overheated really badly before I figured out that my old fan died, and ever since it gets really weird when things get hot. There's probably some heat damage inside the box. Pentium-class processors really aren't meant to reach 120 degrees C, y'know?

Oh yeah, and the reason I avoid re-installing is because I have sooo many things installed that I don't remember half of them, so I don't know which settings to save, or where they are, so I just keep a death-grip on my registry. I screwed up my FAT one time, and did I do the sane thing and do a fresh install? Nooo, I found a data recovery program and got everything back that I could.

I'd go for a fresh install ina heartbeat if I had a video card that didn't fuck up XP, but downgrading from a Radeon 9000 to a PCI Voodoo3 just for XP just doesn't work. I'm probably going to end up with 2K in a month or so. If it lasts that long.
