...if you're not going to be poking around in my computer, why is it so fucking important for you to have access to my administrator account?

okay, so I wake up and hear my parents talking about some sort of network problem. naturally, still being tired, I roll over and try to go back to sleep—somewhat curious about why I woke up, but not really caring.

then I found out. I hear my dad talking about "checking" my computer for some reason, pulling my keyboard tray out, and then getting rather vocally pissed: "where's the fucking mouse?" it's a cordless mouse, dumbass, and it's on the charger right in front of your face.

so after a few minutes he finally fnds it, only to discover that my computer locks when it goes into screensaver. at which point he slams the keyboard tray in about a foot too far and starts yelling about how "if [I don't want my] computer to be accessible, [he'll] shut it down. permanently."

by this point, of course, I'm scrambling into clothes so I can go ask him what the hell his problem is. apparently he decided that the only way to find out my IP address was to go into my computer and run ipconfig. dude, you took a fucking crash course on Windows networking for an MCP exam. the only one you completed in what was supposed to be an MCSE track, in fact. you have a dozen fucking books on the subject. you don't know about net or ping? and any of this is a valid reason to attempt to destroy MY property?

so yeah. according to him (and my mother was just nodding in the background through all this, even when he was slamming my computer around) I have no right to privacy; the fact that he doesn't enter my room is just a courtesy, unnecessary because it's his room in his house, and because "[I] haven't paid for a damn thing in that computer." I responded by saying that he gave it to me: it's my computer. he asked (accusingly) if I had anything to hide, and I said that yes, I do: I keep logs of all my chats and IMs; some people have given me confidential information, and I will not take chances about someone accessing it. you want to snoop in my computer? go ahead. and I'l have you arrested, because I took steps to prevent any legal method of casual access, and you would have to circumvent those—"hack my computer"—to access anything. y'know, maybe you consider your bedroom more private than your computer—I don't.

I've been giving some all-too-serious thought lately to waiting until next Saturday night, swiping a few hundred dollars, and disappearing. I'm having a lot of trouble convincing myself that it's not the greatest idea I've ever had.
