I've a growing suspicion that I may have fucked up. decided to install a new anti virus suite (Bitdefender vice AVG) and things have gone... strange.

currently my desktop is black behind the installer, DWM isn't running nor functional, and half my startup programs are missing. I also get an error every time I open Windows Explorer regarding C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop being unavailable.

I'm having serious second thoughts about the wisdom of this course of action, but of course it's far too late now.

ah. apparently one of the outgoing security programs altered the registry such that Windows was half-convinced that my user profile utilized the directories of the SYSTEM profile. bastards. probably should have straightened that out before I started the three-hour(!), non-optional pre-install scan. oh well.
