Error dialog: Grand Theft Auto III requires at least 12MB of available video memory.

what the hell? last time I checked I had 128MB of video memory; there's no way Windows should be using anywhere near 116.

on the other hand, DDHelp did crash...

2.4.9.I get crashes involving DDHELP.EXE. How can I fix them? (http://www.technologyvault.co.uk/geforce/all_print2.php?prog=gef&lang=en)

Answer:
This may be caused by a corrupt installation of DirectX. Try reinstalling it.

You should also try installing the Detonator 3 (6.xx) or later drivers.

A corrupt installation of DirectX would refuse to flush your memory...
I would suggest looking at that rather than the drivers first.

As things stand, DDHelp only crashes when I close Mozilla while the Sun Java plug-in is loaded. I didn't have any problems like that before I reinstalled Windows, so I'm guessing it has something to due with me installing the JDK instead of the JRE. I'm gonna tweak some things in that before I look at anything else.

Fair enough, Java isn't known for it's excelent memory handling. so this sounds like a plausible scenario. Mind you, if you reinstalled Windows, those DirectX drivers could actually be a problem...

I don't really see how, if DirectX is anywhere near properly written. Installing it on a new Windows installation, on a freshly partitioned and formatted drive should result in the best possible state, shouldn't it?

Yes it should, but we are talking windows here...
I've noticed that I needed to reinstall DirectX after I installed my soundcard, because it was corrupt (Videos wouldn't play correct). After the reinstall of directX off course my dolby5.1 didn't work anymore... :/

Point.

Seems that changing the runtime the plug-in uses was enough. Looks like the default was to use the development runtime. >_<
